Rugby Values
The RFU states that: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship (TREDS) are what make the game special. These values define England Rugby and the culture it fosters.
Teamwork
Teamwork is essential to rugby. We welcome all new members and include everyone because working as a team enriches our lives.
We play selflessly—working for the team, not just for ourselves—on and off the field.
We take pride in our team, rely on one another and value everyone's contribution.
We speak out if our team or sport is threatened by inappropriate words or actions.
Respect
Mutual respect is the foundation of our sport.
We honor the game, its traditions and values, and earn respect by how we behave.
We respect match officials and accept decisions.
We value opposition players and supporters.
We appreciate our coaches and club volunteers, treating clubhouses with care.
Enjoyment
Enjoyment is the heart of rugby union.
We encourage players to enjoy training, matches, and being part of the rugby family.
We use sport to foster healthy lifestyles and life skills.
We safeguard our young players and help them to have fun.
Discipline
Discipline underpins rugby.
Our sport involves controlled physical effort, honesty, and fairness.
We follow the laws of the game to make it inclusive and exciting.
We support the disciplinary system and uphold the sport’s values.
We report serious breaches of rules or conduct.
Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is the bedrock of rugby union.
We uphold camaraderie and observe fair play on and off the pitch.
We are generous in victory and dignified in defeat.
We play to win—but not at all costs.
We focus on development and wellbeing of every player.
Minis' U6/U7/U8 Our Sunday Huddle: Listen, Try Your Best, Have Fun
We simplify TREDS into three guiding principles for our players:
To Listen
- Listen to coaches and understand what is being asked.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help, a repeat explanation, or a demonstration.
Try Your Best
- Rugby is for all: fast, slow, tall, short—everyone matters.
- No single exceptional player wins a match alone.
- Effort matters more than results.
- We use positive language like “we played better” or “we scored more tries.”
Have Fun
- Fun in training, fun in matches, fun even when it’s wet and cold.
- Enjoy the team environment and the sense of growth and belonging.
Summary
These core values set rugby apart from many other team sports.
As coaches and parents, we aim to model these principles and nurture every child’s development both on and off the pitch.
