10. Regulation 15 Age Grade Rugby

Reg 15 Age Grade Tag Rugby Training

Expectations
Here’s what players and adults can expect from us.

Coaches’ Code of Practice:

  • Develop appreciation for rugby and promote good sportsmanship
  • Boost confidence of all players
  • Never ridicule any player
  • Plan sessions focused on skill development, decision-making, and understanding the game
  • Maintain high standards of discipline and act as role models
  • Never force unwilling children to participate
  • Encourage rule-based play
  • Teach effort, teamwork and respect
  • Be fair, consistent, and encouraging
  • Remain approachable to players and parents
  • Avoid foul language and abusive behaviour

Training and Joint Training (JT)
Training usually runs Sundays, 09:00–10:00 at BRFC grounds.

  • Schedule will be posted once confirmed by other clubs
  • Changes to timing/location will be shared in team chat
  • Occasionally, players may stay longer to practise tag rugby
  • Spectator presence is welcomed, especially for young players
  • Prompt arrival before session start is essential
  • Please avoid interfering with set-up areas (cones, balls, obstacles)
  • Stay off pitches while spectating, but remain nearby
  • Notify coaches if you need to leave temporarily
  • Players are encouraged to notify coaches when leaving/returning (e.g. toilet breaks)
  • Help with bibs, belts, tags, cones, and balls is appreciated

Time Outs
Disruptive behaviour will be managed respectfully.

  • Time outs only after sufficient warnings
  • Fighting, hitting, or kicking is not acceptable
  • Adults will be informed if behaviour becomes a pattern

Joint Training (JT)
JT offers shared training and mixed tag games at various club locations.

  • Attendance encouraged for U6/U7/U8 players
  • Acknowledging travel and fuel costs
  • Car sharing is permitted with prior adult consent
  • Organise travel yourself via team chat; not regular practice

Travel Arrangements – RFU Safeguarding
Transporting players should be rare and properly managed.

  • Only with full adult and player consent
  • Provide full travel details: destination, driver, adult chaperones
  • Coaches must not travel alone with a player
  • Emergency contact info must be available
  • No assumptions that coaches will routinely provide transport

Skills, Drills & Principles of Play
Adults will be included in weekly skill/drill explanations.

  • Allows home practice and deeper understanding
  • Training planned using RFU’s APES and FITT principles
  • RFU Principles of Play introduced in simplified format

Example Drills:

  • Fundamentals of movement
  • Running with two hands on the ball
  • Scoring with control and balance
  • Head-up awareness while moving
  • Staying inside the play zone
  • Tag Rugby introduction and rule explanation
  • Passing and catching accuracy
  • Running to score
  • Evasion tactics and finding space

Notes:
Teaching Tag Rugby rules takes time and shared understanding between coaches and adults.
Professional rugby differs from our training format—players may emulate contact styles seen on TV.

Summary

  • Arrival before start time is crucial
  • Sessions run for 60 minutes (incl. warmup/warm-down)
