Reg 15 Age Grade Tag Rugby Training
Expectations
Here’s what players and adults can expect from us.
Coaches’ Code of Practice:
- Develop appreciation for rugby and promote good sportsmanship
- Boost confidence of all players
- Never ridicule any player
- Plan sessions focused on skill development, decision-making, and understanding the game
- Maintain high standards of discipline and act as role models
- Never force unwilling children to participate
- Encourage rule-based play
- Teach effort, teamwork and respect
- Be fair, consistent, and encouraging
- Remain approachable to players and parents
- Avoid foul language and abusive behaviour
Training and Joint Training (JT)
Training usually runs Sundays, 09:00–10:00 at BRFC grounds.
- Schedule will be posted once confirmed by other clubs
- Changes to timing/location will be shared in team chat
- Occasionally, players may stay longer to practise tag rugby
- Spectator presence is welcomed, especially for young players
- Prompt arrival before session start is essential
- Please avoid interfering with set-up areas (cones, balls, obstacles)
- Stay off pitches while spectating, but remain nearby
- Notify coaches if you need to leave temporarily
- Players are encouraged to notify coaches when leaving/returning (e.g. toilet breaks)
- Help with bibs, belts, tags, cones, and balls is appreciated
Time Outs
Disruptive behaviour will be managed respectfully.
- Time outs only after sufficient warnings
- Fighting, hitting, or kicking is not acceptable
- Adults will be informed if behaviour becomes a pattern
Joint Training (JT)
JT offers shared training and mixed tag games at various club locations.
- Attendance encouraged for U6/U7/U8 players
- Acknowledging travel and fuel costs
- Car sharing is permitted with prior adult consent
- Organise travel yourself via team chat; not regular practice
Travel Arrangements – RFU Safeguarding
Transporting players should be rare and properly managed.
- Only with full adult and player consent
- Provide full travel details: destination, driver, adult chaperones
- Coaches must not travel alone with a player
- Emergency contact info must be available
- No assumptions that coaches will routinely provide transport
Skills, Drills & Principles of Play
Adults will be included in weekly skill/drill explanations.
- Allows home practice and deeper understanding
- Training planned using RFU’s APES and FITT principles
- RFU Principles of Play introduced in simplified format
Example Drills:
- Fundamentals of movement
- Running with two hands on the ball
- Scoring with control and balance
- Head-up awareness while moving
- Staying inside the play zone
- Tag Rugby introduction and rule explanation
- Passing and catching accuracy
- Running to score
- Evasion tactics and finding space
Notes:
Teaching Tag Rugby rules takes time and shared understanding between coaches and adults.
Professional rugby differs from our training format—players may emulate contact styles seen on TV.
